  • Thoughts About America

It’s an election year. I’m still not sure what to make of the candidates, except that they will probably only be able to keep a few of the promises they are making. It’s not that they are not willing, they probably just can’t. Good intentions, maybe, but truthfully how much can one possibly get done in such a divided situation? Anyway, the race is interesting, the field of options for once looks good.

Meanwhile the invasion of illegal immigrants continues. Is it racist to say that? It is a race issue to some I’m sure. For me it’s more a matter of economics, safety, and health care. Check out http://www.cis.org/articles/index.html. So what is my next President going to do about it? Lately, my country’s government seems strangely beholden to Mexico. Mexican troop incursions ignored, border agents going to jail, it’s strange. Something’s up. I think someone’s getting paid. Our hospitals certainly are not. Kingsburg just closed their ER because they were not getting paid. Reminds of the 1980′s all over again.

I don’t like all the Mexican gangs in my area, I don’t like the Russian mafia in Spokane Washington either. Does that make me a racist? Last time I checked, Russians were mostly white.

Of course there’s always the possibility that our economics and our politics need an overhaul. Surely European nations don’t suffer as much as California does due to the influx of non-citizens. How do they handle it? They are all so small (no offense) compared to our states, and so packed together, and they APPEAR to be so integrated; speaking each other’s language and all. I only speak English. I don’t speak any other language. Might that not be an indicator of a larger problem inherent in our culture which is causing a crises. Maybe a change or shift in our political orientation (I have no idea what it would be) might turn the tables in everyone’s favor? Are we simply slow to change, or truly a nation at risk from foreign invaders willing to work for peanuts; while others form gangs and kill my fellow Americans stuck in the crossfire.  What will my next President do about it? That’s the only issue that matters to me. Because in California, in my opinion, the quality of life for citizen and non-citizen alike depends on the answer.

  • Here in Florida this is a big issue too.  The U.S. can really no longer be the melting pot it once could.  I agree that the illegal immigrant issue is a big one.  I think that the illegal immigrant is just that – illegal.  I understand that some have been here so long they have family, that they came from really harsh situations, but it’s just not fair to the immigrants that are going through the changes legally.  When I was in India – not one person that I met believed that there are poor people in the U.S.  Where we were in India, homeless people were premitted to build a shelter on any government property.  There were shantys everywhere.  Try that in the U.S.!  We get lots of bad publicity all over the world for smut from Hollywood and greedy commerce, but who reports that living in the U.S. is not easy.  Who reports that if you can’t make it econimically the government will not necessarily take care of you!  The whole immigration issue needs overhauled.  Looks to me like – due to the element of crime – there needs to be a truly secure border at Mexico.  There’s a new military assignment.  I don’t get it either.

  • You certainly do not sound racist to me, but a concerned citizen.  I am for anyone coming to America but come to our country legally.  And once you get here, learn the language.  One of the English teachers in my school warns the hispanic students they are NOT allow to speak spanish in her class.  I was proud of her to take a stand on her convictions.

This election scares me to death.

Good to see you posting again.  And thanks again for your kind and encouraging words to me.  I still need them every once in a while.

  • To answer your question…NO!

It is not the least bit racist to want illegal immigrants stopped. Being an illegal immigrant is a national affiliation, not a statement of race. The vast majority are Hispanic only because we have an unprotected border with Mexico. I’m sure if the US bordered Uganda instead of Mexico, we’d have a swarm of illegal Ugandan immigrants as the central issue.

The illegals who purposely create social separatist groups like gangs and illegal workers groups have done so by their own accord. They are the ones who identify themselves by their nationality and fly their colors in defiance of our laws and national unity. Being a citizen who wants a more stable economy, safer environment, and healthier community is only asking for what is promised by our constitution. You are only asking our government for what our fellow countrymen have fought and defended for hundreds of years.

Our political system is our Achilles Heal. The very government we established to protect us will be our undoing. Not because democracy is bad for our republic, but because the principles on which it was founded have been marginalized or ignored.

We are no longer a government by the people. We are now a form of government in which supreme power is vested by special interest groups and exercised by the political parties. We no longer have elected agents under a free electoral system–party nominations and the electoral college has seen to that. We are no longer a common people of a community; we are distinguished from the privileged class and have become a citizenry with little or no influence on political power.

US politics is nothing more than self interest masquerading as American values. Some of our presidential candidates may have good intentions about effecting change, but at the end of the day it will be about securing their future interests.

I could not disagree with you more that our presidential options look good.

The Clintons have a well established history of Machiavellian politics. Their personal lack of character has tarnished the esteem of the presidency. It has always been about what’s good for them and Hillary’s bid is no different. My case in point can be found here: http://www.hillcap.org/default.php?page_id=2

Although it’s novel having a black run for president, that fact remains that race is totally irrelevant. He is simply not qualified whatsoever. And to compare Obama to JFK is absolute heresy–the Kennedy’s have no shame. Neither of the Democratic candidates have any executive experience, and with our economy disintegrating, we need that experience more than ever. The presidency should never be an internship.

McCain seem the presidential sort, but his stance on immigration is questionable at best and he too lacks the executive experience necessary to bring about economic stability.

That leaves us with Romney. He is probably the best candidate when it comes to the economy, but we are also at war–in Iraq–and at our borders. With his indecisiveness and lack of experience we are not any better off with him than the others.

Whatever happened to nominating true statesmen? The US has not had a statesman as a presidential candidate since WWII. Each subsequent president is less a statesman and more a politician. You think we have good options for once? We have a platform of professional politicians and wealthy businessmen from which to choose. The reality is, it’s more about style than substance.

The lack of quality candidates is not the real problem. Party politics with corporate sponsorship is.

Here is an idea…What if Americans voted to change the rules for the Executive Branch and whichever political party wins the presidency, another political party holds the office of vice-presidency. Or better yet, what about going back to the original voting system that allows the citizens to elect the president and the candidate with the most votes is the president and the runner up is the vice-president, regardless of political party.

The bottom line is that America no longer has an effective government. It functions, but being functional does not equate to effectiveness.

This is why illegal immigration is problematic. The presidential candidates are more worried about getting the nomination; the Hispanic vote is of greater importance than ridding our country of the plague of illegal immigrant brethren.

Patriotism has been supplanted by capitalism and as long as sponsorship and profit are the driving forces, it will continue to “distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble the Public Administration,” just as George Washington predicted in his farewell speech 212 years ago.

So, will our net president solve the illegal immigrant issue that matter so much to you and many of us?

Unfortunately, probably not. It’s unlikely he will solve it, but he will work on it. Not because he wants to, but because he has to.

As a veteran of the Marines I am sworn to protect the United States from enemis foreign… and domestic. Illegal immigrants invading our country and causing social economic disorder sounds a lot like a domestic enemy to me. How is their disrespect of our country, its values, and its laws any different than a foreign military invasion force? I’ll tell you…

The difference is that illegal aliens aren’t wearing matching uniforms, but most importantly they are not affecting the agenda of capitalism. A military invasion would hinder capitalism and thwart political gain and therefore would be considered a legitimate threat.

If corporate America was taxed proportionately to the effects of illegal immigration [hindering capitalism], the solution would be forced upon the politicians [thwarting political gain] and the illegal immigration problem would all but disappear. You can bet on it.

  • Thanks for all the great responses here. Some very interesting points of view and things for me to think about. Personally, I’ll probably write-in Zaphod Beeblbrox for President. :)

  • Found you at brokenbinding2′s site and came to visit.  This piece is very interesting, and so crucial right now.  We all need wisdom and luck in our choices for the upcoming elections. . .
